
In microbiology, TNTC stands for Too Numerous to Count. It describes an agar plate with so many overlapping microbial colonies that an accurate or reliable number cannot be determined.
When determining a concentration of microorganisms within a test sample using a technique which involves counting individual bacterial colonies or colony forming units (CFU) on a test plate, there is a possibility that the concentration observed on the test plate may exceed the upper countable limit of the test.
In such situations where a value cannot be provided the result may be reported as Too Numerous to Count, or TNTC.

A TNTC plate generally should not be treated as an exact colony count.
If another appropriate dilution produces a countable plate, that result may be used for calculation according to the applicable method.
A general microbial enumeration concept is:
CFU = Number of colonies ร Dilution factor รท Volume plated
However, the exact calculation and reporting approach should follow the relevant validated method or pharmacopeial procedure.
TNTC โ Too Numerous To Count is a common observation in microbiological testing when colony numbers are too high for reliable individual counting.
It does not mean the analyst should estimate the number or automatically conclude that the sample has failed.
Instead, the microbiologist should review appropriate dilution plates, verify the test process, perform calculations according to the validated method, and document the result accurately.
